What is so-called hybrid art? And what do hybrid artists do? In the field of science, ever since several important discoveries in the area of the so-called life sciences were made over the last 30 years, a new relationship with life has been established – life has become a subject of engineering. Here are a few examples: Growing a human ear on the Vacanti mouse, the cloning of Dolly the sheep and the discovery of the human genome have changed the world. In the late 1990’s, artists began to interrogate the area of biotechnology, e.g. tissue engineering, and gradually to gain access to laboratories where they could work with live matter. What kind of materials for creating sculptures are cells and bacteria? How do some artists use tissue engineering in their work? The artists Maja Smrekar, Špela Petrič, Robertina Šebjanič, Polona Tratnik and Saša Spačal engage in hybrid art, which uses the tools of biotechnology, and examines the effects of biotechnology on society as a whole. A film by Saša Šavel Burkart Directed by Špela Kuclar
